Be Present

Post image for Be Present

August 24, 2012

If you’ve come to one of my yoga classes, you know that I continually make reminders to be present, let the mind go so you can focus on the union of the body and the breath, coming into the essence of what yoga is all about.

Of course, being present isn’t always the easiest thing to do. So, if you need an extra little reminder to take you to that place of calm, you might want to check out the line of simple and super comfortable yoga clothing by a company aptly named – Be Present.

Their cute lotus-themed logo can be found on most of the pieces, and when I wear mine and get a peek of that logo as I fold forward into uttanasana, it always give me a subtle reminder to stay present in my practice.

The cool folks at Be Present recently sent me two pieces of clothing from their line, and I wore them this summer when I taught yoga and also attended classes.

I have to say that I absolutely love the Modal Racerback Tank they sent. I’d never heard of modal, but this fabric feels  silky and soft on the skin, and it fits tightly around the waist. I like the unique detail of the gathered racerback, and the ruching in the front provides a very flattering fit (especially if you want to hide your belly).

When I first tried on the Mobility Pant, I felt more like I should be taking off for an African safari than going to teach a yoga class. But, these pants are so comfortable, and that long side slit provided a nice breeze up my legs as I taught on the beach on hot summer days. I can see myself lounging around in these on a lazy Saturday afternoon as well.

Here are a couple of cool things you need to know about Be Present:

  • All their clothes are made in the USA.
  • They are a small, family-owned business that follows environmentally friendly practices.
  • The colors for their line are inspired by the colors of the chakras. (Humm, they sent me my Mobility pants in purple, the color of the crown chakra, associated with wisdom and the spiritual world. I like that and feel very wise when I wear them!)
  •  Their clothing is perfect both off and on the yoga mat, and they have great styles for men too.

I just did all three: liked them on FB, followed them on Twitter and am thinking about buying that tank!

(p.s. I love the “pull out of a hat method”! Just in case you’d like an online suggestion, you can check out random.org to pick a random number for you.)

Thanks for this — I now follow them on twitter, and I plan to check out their website when I have the time to actually shop.

being present is a mental activity for me – both on and off the mat. Off the mat, when I find myself thinking about things that are beyond the moment, I pull myself back to the moment and thinking about what I can do right now. This also helps overall focus. On the mat I also do that (but not always via rhyming lol) but I also focus on breathing and thinking about the muscles I am working or hope to work or want to work. You cannot really be elsewhere to do that, or so it is for me.
Thanks for asking us to think on what we do to be present.
Happy Birthday to DDD!

I LOVE their VOTE t-shirts! Those are really cool. Staying present is a challenge for me. But, I guess what helps me both on and off the yoga mat is breath. When I exhale, I make sure to feel and hear everything around me.

to stay present, I take a few deep breathes and focus on my immediate surroundings and my body. I do this every couple of hours. This summer I’ve really tried to focus on this during the amazing moments of my life. I have had some wonderful experiences this summer and I’ve made a real effort to be fully present for them.

Maria- those clothes are super cute. I noticed both of them when you wore them. Happy bday to your wonderful blog!! You are amazing and I am so glad that I found you.

My technique is to stop everything, take a breath and focus on this exact moment! Let everything else go and be present in THIS moment. It’s my own little pep talk to myself :)

To remind myself to be present I often take a deep breath and repeat “let go”!

Meditation after Yoga clears my mind, and sets me up for a” be present” type of day. When stress or pressure sets in during the day, I take a deep breath and remind myself to “be mindful”, I slow down and pause to drink in a few good breaths, then I smile:)

Being Present is almost always difficult for me. My mind races to the next pose, to my next task, to what I have left undone…..I always return to Ujaii breath to bring me back into the moment and back into my body. Sometimes my whole practice is part Ujaii because that is what it takes to bring me into now. Works for me. Also music helps me. I try to be aware enough of my mood to pick music that speaks to me right now.

The way I am most easily able to reach the state of “being present” is through use of my body (yoga, walking, biking), ideally followed by a quiet period (even a few minutes!) of meditation.

(I like Be Present on Facebook…and they’re my fav pants!)

Being present for me means accepting the moment without judgement, and learning to let go of ego, competition, negativity and blame. To be present I connect with my breath, and let go of anything that no longer serves me.
