Looking for a cool tune for your yoga-class playlist that will get your students in the holiday mood without being cheesy? I have to give a shout out for fellow Akron gal Chrissie Hynde. Take a minute to listen to her holiday anthem “2000 Miles” with the Pretenders, and you’ll see why this is a perfect song to accompany a few holiday asanas.
If you’re not about the holiday music, her song “VegiTerranean, a hip vegan Italian-Mediterranean fusion restaurant in Akron (which happens to be a very risky venture in meat-and-potatoes Ohio) that I’m a huge fan of. I love a restaurant where I can order and eat anything from the menu (there are not many of those in Ohio)!
Chrissie, please tell me your secret of looking so amazing (yes, I am delusional enough to think that she will read my blog!)? I’m hoping yoga is a part of the routine to keep you looking and feeling so great. If so, you are welcome at any of my Akron-area yoga classes!
Got a favorite Chrissie song you have used on your yoga playlist? Let me know if you use any holiday music in your playlists. Also, would it be cheesy to do my Christmas Eve class with all Christmas music (I’m thinking yeah but wanted some feedback)?
I’m liking this “Featured Yoga Playlist Artist” thing, it may just become a regular feature here at the DDD!

I love this post! I go back and forth between no music and music in my classes. One studio I teach at plays music (non yoga music) and it’s a hit with those students. Tonight I introduced to my zenlike-airy-fairy listening type crowd with a playlist that consisted of hip-hop, reggae, rock, and pop. Their faces lit up. They breathed more deeply. They smiled even when I held them long!! Best of all, they let go during savasana. Not a single stir. Hmmmm… the experiment continues this week!
Please keep me posted on your experiment! I have not been teaching yoga for long, but I did have a student tell me that they had never listened to popular music during class and that it was the first class he was able to relax and not worry about how he looked in a pose, or think about how hard a pose was – he just got into the yoga. My favorite is when I can get the class to bust out into a dance!
I plan to start posting my class playlists on the DDD – so stay tuned!
“bust out in dance”….is that yoga?
i MIStakenly thought that yoga meant union with 1 self…
N0thing fr0M the outside brings tru & lasting HAPPYness
perhaps 1 should RAMP-UP their practice if they still NEED outside influences in practice
how does 1 kno if playing dj..that the music reminds the students of heartbr e ak
how can 1 surrender 2 THE LORD WITHin if they’re listening OUTside forces
i suppose it’s what makes america what it is… MARKETING..& the NEED 2 FEEL G00D
do we have it s00 bad ???
Thankfully we have a choice in what type of yoga we choose to practice and which classes we attend. I have had so many students tell me that they enjoy the music I play in class, that it helps them relax, let go of stress, and anxiety and get into their practice. I know there are different opinions on playing music in class, so I appreciate you sharing your views as well. And yes, yoga is a dance to me – anytime you can express yourself with your body and feel great joy it is a beautiful thing.
Great tunes Maria. Pretenders song is classic. Too bad vegeterranean closed!
