The power and worship of the goddesses of yoga has intrigued me ever since I learned about these kick-ass yoginis during my yoga teacher training. I’m a big fan of Lakshmi and an even bigger fan of all the mere mortal women who are truly goddesses in my life.
I can’t even tell you how thrilled I was when I learned that Sally Kempton had written Awakening Shakti, a book about the transformative power of goddesses and how we can tap into and harness their powers and our own feminine energies to manifest joy, abundance, and love. Once you begin to understand what these powers are, they can heighten your ability to show up and shine in every aspect of your life, open you up spiritually, help you let go of fear and love more deeply, and fuel your creativity.
In Awakening Shakti, Sally Kempton explores Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Radha, Bhuvaneshvari, Parvati, Suti, Durga, and Dhumvavati in great detail and illustrates how to recognize and invite their qualities into your life through meditations, visualizations, mantras, teachings, and great storytelling. This book is incredibly well-researched and provides so much information that you will want to take your time and savor each chapter, do the exercises, pause to reflect, and journal about them. At least that’s exactly what I’m doing!
After reading the introductory chapters, which provide an excellent primer on goddesses, I jumped ahead to Chapter 4 to read up on my girl Lakshmi. Kempton’s every page blew me away with all the research and knowledge about this goddess, and I quickly picked up on why I’ve always been drawn to her power and the power of all goddesses.
“All the goddesses confer power. Shakti, after all, is power. The fierce goddesses offer us the power to fight our battles, the inner ones and the outer ones. The wisdom goddesses give us inspiration and insight and the skill of speech. Lakshmi and her queenly sister goddess, Tripura Sundari, embody the skills of success—worldly and spiritual. They also carry the inner qualities that make life lovely: love, harmony, kindness. When we have Lakshmi, the old mythic texts tell us, we have everything, inner and outer, for a beautiful life.”
If you’ve always been fascinated with the yoga goddesses, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Awakening Shakti. I used one of the meditations from it in my Embracing Your Inner Goddess yoga class workshop and plan to use it countless times in the future for yoga class themes and meditations, and I’m sure this will not be the last time I write about this awesome book on The Daily Downward Dog.
Yogini goddess Sally Kempton is a writer for Yoga Journal and teaches workshops, retreats, and online courses internationally. She has spent over forty years practicing, studying, and teaching meditation and spiritual philosophy. You can follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and her website.
Embrace Your Inner Goddess Workshop
Friday, May 17 – Nirvana Yoga in Richfield, Ohio – 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Saturday, June 1 – Namaste Yoga Studio in Sagamore Hills, Ohio – 2:00 to 4:00 PM
Join me for my Embracing Your Inner Goddess themed workshop where we’ll explore the qualities that goddesses possess. You might be surprised at how many of these qualities—taking care of yourself, being present, loving yourself just the way you are—are in essence the same as the principles taught in the yoga sutras. By living in a yogic way both on and off the mat, we’re also in training to be goddesses! This 2-hour workshop will include discussion, a vinyasa yoga class suited for all levels, a meditation to tap into your divine inner feminine power, and opportunities to love and support fellow yogini goddesses. Bring a friend, a sister, your mother, a group of friends, or just yourself to share in this celebration of the goddesses in our lives. Please bring a journal and something to write with.
