I have to say that these last few weeks of teaching yoga have been an absolute delight and full of creativity. Even though it was cold and snowing like crazy on March 29, a packed house at Yoga Bliss Akron heated it up so it felt as hot as Jamaica, and the picture was complete with their reggae mat dancing during my Yoga of Bob Marley class.
Last Saturday, I got to hang out with the coolest group of dead-icated yogis doing deadhead downward dogs during my Yoga of the Grateful Dead class. And, it has been a blast putting together all of the inspirational classes I will lead during the Beach Yoga Bliss II retreat in Aruba (woo hoo, can’t wait to get on that plane and head to the Caribbean on April 22!).
Putting together these special themed classes has been challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to spread my wings and combine three things I’m really passionate about: yoga, music, and travel. Here are just a few highlights that have made these classes so cool to teach!
1) Reggae Dancer. When I was planning the Bob Marley and Grateful Dead classes, part of the flows included dancing. For both classes, I worried whether or not anyone would dance. I don’t know why; I guess it’s something an author or musician tends to worry about – whether or not what they’ve created will be infectious enough for people to let go and give into the rhythm. I’m happy to report that my worries were for naught. All the yogis danced and flowed on their yoga mats, and it was awesome to see and to dance along with them.

2) Dead-icated. At the beginning of the Grateful Dead class, I asked the attendees how many of them had been to a Grateful Dead concert. One gentleman had been to 3 shows, another 80, and unbelievably one woman announced that she had been to 200 shows. Wowza! I was just a little intimidated and in awe of the knowledge of the Dead she must have. I wonder if I could convince her to travel around the world to all of my Yoga of the Grateful Dead classes*? It made me stop and think about how dedicated I am to my yoga practice.

3) Deadhead Confessions. I admitted to the class that I had never been to a concert or been a huge fan of the group until I started to put together this class. But when I really started to listen to their music as I put the set list (aka playlist) together, I found myself adding song after song to the point where it really became a struggle to narrow down my top choices. With all the recorded live versions of their music available, the exploration of Grateful Dead’s creations could go on and on. Being the confessed new fan that I am, I’m planning to keep on truckin’ and listening (and flowing) along.

Love is Shaking on Shakedown Street!
4) Masters of Improvisation. Every Grateful Dead concert had periods where the band improvised, and that is where the magic and freedom began. We did the same thing on our mats, giving ourselves permission to deviate from the flow and let loose into improvisational or freedom-style yoga. I told the group they could start by plugging into the flow I had just taught them, or they could improvise their very own movement – to let themselves loop in, feel the vibe, tune into the music and into the asanas, and let their vinyasas and their breath dance. I was first exposed to freedom-style yoga by Erich Schiffmann, and it is always a treat to get to share this liberating practice with others.
5) Hubby Yoga. I just had to smile when my husband showed up for the Grateful Dead class since he does not have a regular yoga practice. Not only did he show up, but he came to the studio with his Vernice Vita yoga mat and NamaSTAY Yoga Towel so he could be dead-icated to his yoga flows with slip-free comfort!

6) Listening to the Universe. Sometimes you get an idea to do something and then just sit on it. The idea to create the yoga classes tied to the yoga teachings of Bob Marley, the Grateful Dead, and the Beatles came to me over a year ago, but I didn’t act on it right away. Fortunately, there were a few people in my life who lit a fire under my ass and encouraged me to put them together: sharing song suggestions and concert experiences to relay the messages from the universe I needed to keep the dream of these classes alive. Thank you, Joe, Vernon, and Mike!

7) Encore! I am super excited that I have one more class to go in this music series. The Yoga of the Beatles is coming up Friday, May 16, at Yoga Bliss Akron from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. *After that I’m ready to take these classes on tour, so if you would like more information about the series or would like to book them at your yoga studio, please contact me at maria @ dailydownwarddog.com or (330) 289-7026.
I’m feeling blessed, energized, and grateful to Bob, the Beatles, and the Grateful Dead for the inspiration, incredible music, and for living their yoga off the mat through their music and the way they cared and showed compassion for all beings.

Spring is a time of year that brings me a great deal of joy as nature comes alive again with budding trees, daffodils, and green grass. I get to wear sandals again as the weather starts to warm up after a brutally hard winter here in Ohio. But, there is one part of spring that strikes fear and an overwhelming dread in my heart: spring cleaning.
I did a little inventory this weekend, and I cringe as I look around my house and see all the dust, accumulated clutter, and dirty windows. It got me thinking that there’s not just physical clutter in my house I need to deal with; there’s mental clutter that I need to attend to as well. Little chunks of energy have been hiding out inside me that I really need to sweep away in order to allow me to let go and live fully in the present.
And, to top it all off, my yoga mat is looking like it could use a little tender loving care too.
My angst levels starts to rise as I accept the fact that a deep clean is in my future, and it’s time to declutter, lighten the load, and move on.
I’m happy to say that I’ve got the yoga mat cleaning under control thanks to my good friends over at NamaSTAY Yoga Towels, who recently introduced an innovative yoga spray that cleans mats, towels AND clothes, infusing a fresh citrus scent that has undertones of patchouli, lavender, and tea tree pure essential oils.

NamaSTAY Yoga Spray is all-natural and antibacterial so you can simply spray it on your yoga mat after class and wipe it dry to kill bacteria.
I used to just wash my yoga mat with soap and water, but not anymore because I am loving the clean scent of lavender and patchouli that drifts up and greets me when I practice. They say that lavender helps promote clear thinking, calms the spirit, and soothes the skin, and it’s good for circulation to boot.
So, that NamaSTAY Yoga Spray may just help me clear out some of that clutter in my mind. Humm… I wonder if it would work on my windows too.

Well, the 2014 movie awards season may have come to an end, but it’s not too late to get dressed up (in some snazzy yoga pants from Onzie), roll out the extra-long red yoga mat, and hand out the 2014 YOGAR Awards!
What are the YOGARs, you ask? Just a groovy little award presentation I’ve been doing since 2010 to recognize the cool yoga experiences, music, and people who have made the last year completely yogalicious.
In 2013, I added a new twist by asking my yoga students to nominate their favorite asanas, and then I themed my yoga classes around their picks during the week of the Oscars. This year, I’m skipping the nominations and going straight to the awards!
BEST ASANA
Adho mukha savasana (downward dog) is always a big contender, followed up strongly by savasana (corpse), but this year I’ve got to give the award to eka pada rajakapotasana (one-legged king pigeon). Eka P. R. and I never experience drama – only a sweet, long, juicy release for my hips, thighs, shoulders, and low back. Thank you, Eka!
BEST SCENERY (Cinematography) for YOGA
Wow, the competition was tough in this category as I got to practice yoga on the Caribbean beaches of Aruba, the mountains of Colorado, the shores of Cinque Terre in Italy, and in Mykonos, Greece. But, nothing beats a hometown sunset, and the YOGAR award goes to the stunning views on the beaches of Lake Erie at Linwood Park, Main Street Beach Vermilion, and Firefly Beach in Huron, Ohio. During the evening sunset classes in particular, you could not ask for better cinematography while looking out at the colors of the sunset painted on the sky and water as the waves crashed up on the beach. The picture below beautifully captures one of my favorite scenes from the summer Beach Yoga Bliss retreat held at Firefly Beach.

BEST YOGA MOMENT
It was a big year for yoga in my life, and some of the top moments included having a swarm of yogis show up at Firefly Beach for a full moon yoga class I taught over the summer, attending a live music class with Girish,

Blissed out at Yoga Bliss with Girish!
and practicing yoga with over 1,600 yogis in front of the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as part of the Believe in CLE event. The best yoga moment, though, goes to how incredible I felt when practicing yoga on the beach in Aruba right after I finished teaching the last class of my very first Beach Yoga Bliss retreat. It was a combination of sheer exhaustion and utter delight when I realized that one of my dreams had just come true, and the accompanying feeling was both exhilarating and moving as it brought me to tears of joy.

Teaching yoga in Aruba!
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
Hands down my favorite yoga wear this past year has been from the colorful and unique prints and designs from Onzie. I just got to try out their new spring line, and it rocks.

These capris in the Meadow print have a waistband that fits really snug, stays put, and is super comfortable.
Onzie’s All in One Tank Top completed my YOGAR winning ensemble with free-flowing jersey fabric that has all the right moves: snug and secure in the lined built-in-bra, loose fitting around the belly (love that), longer length to cover the hip area, and a really cool looking back!

Head on over to the Onzie website to check out their new collection, but make sure you have more than a few minutes because their array of 15 creative and playful fabric designs for their capris makes it hard to pick just one style.

BEST DIRECTOR

Yoga teacher, storyteller, and really funny guy David Rominelli at Studio Oxygen in Canfield, Ohio
Best Director. My teachers last year included stand-up paddle-boarding and inversions with Rachel Brathen in Aruba, and wine and chocolate after a vinyasa practice with lots of great storytelling and laughter from David Rominelli.

Full of Bliss after practicing with Rachel Brathen in Aruba
But I have to give this one to yogini goddess Angela Farmer, who I had the privilege of studying with for a few days in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Angela taught me a lot about listening and trusting my body. To remember to look deeply into ourselves and when we do we can go on a journey where new things will open up for us.

BEST MUSIC
As great as it is, Pharrell William’s catchy feel-good song “Happy” did not win the Oscar, and it didn’t win the YOGAR. But it definitely has a fond place in one of my yoga class playlists. “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors also was nominated, but the award this year is going to one of the coolest albums for yoga class playlists, Jahta Beat The Lotus Memoirs by DJ Drez and, in particular, the song “For What It’s Worth,” which graced my yoga class playlists countless times.

BEST SHORT FEATURE
Well, of course, the Hang Ten Meditation videos completely swept this category. If you have ten minutes, take a break and enjoy a guided meditation with me and the sound of the waves. In my acceptance speech, I’ve got to thank Greg and Candice Slawson of GC Creative Studios for their expert work in bringing these videos to life. Maybe this year I’ll try an animated version. 😉

BEST SUPPORTING ASANA
This one goes out to the City of Vermilion and the Vermilion School Board for giving me a home for my yoga classes throughout the summer and winter months. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Everyone loves to get affirmation, and yesterday I got to receive a huge dose of special affirmations whispered lovingly into my ear. Before you start thinking it was my husband getting all romantic before Valentine’s Day, think again, because these beautiful messages were delivered by fellow yogis who are participating in the 40 Days to Personal Revolution program along with me at Yoga Bliss Akron.
As I sat with eyes closed, these were just a few of the sweet affirmations whispered into my ear:
You are beautiful.
I am so glad you’re here.
Your smile lights up the room.
You are smart!
I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to have these positive message delivered in such a delicate but powerful way, and I allowed myself to accept the affirmations, to believe them, and to let them fill my heart with loving kindness.
In my yoga classes this week I spoke about the importance of nurturing yourself, to be sure you are talking to yourself in a way that is loving, the same way you would talk to someone you cared deeply for.
Do you practice loving kindness on your yoga mat, or do you spend a lot of time beating yourself up about not being able to quiet your mind or touch your toes?
Next time you step onto your yoga mat, try something new and silently whisper positive affirmations to yourself. Be gentle, loving, kind, and attentive as you practice. Step outside of your normal routine and focus on taking care of you, and I guarantee you will feel better. Notice how your yoga practice changes, and expect to be delighted.
The affirmation I shared with the rest of the group was a quote from Buddha:
“You more than anyone else in the entire universe
is worthy of your love.”

The 40 Days to Personal Revolution program I’m participating in is being led by Tracy Rhinehart. This powerful and proven program was developed by Baron Baptiste and provides the tools, guidance and, inspiration to awaken the unlimited potential that resides in all of us. For the next 40 days I’ll be practicing yoga and meditation daily, eating mindfully (including a 3-day juice fast), journaling, and focusing on personal growth. I can’t wait to see what these next 40 days bring and I’ll keep you posted on my journey.
Please leave a comment below if you have ever participated in a program like this and let me know about your experience!

I have been home for more than a week, and I still haven’t come down from the blissfully high feeling I was left with at the end of SKIASANA. In keeping with tradition, I’m recapping the ski and yoga retreat with a top ten list of all the reasons why I can’t wipe the smile off my face.
The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music and Om! When we first got to Vermont, it had rained for the last few days so there wasn’t much snow on the ground, the sky was gray, and it was not at all the winter wonderland I had dreamed of. That first night of the retreat, as we sat in the hot tub with a light drizzle falling on us, the rain magically turned to snow, and from that point forward the magic of Stowe Mountain came alive. I can’t tell you how many times I was overcome with the spontaneous and joyful desire to burst out singing, “The hills are alive with the sound of music.” Not many people know this, but my namesake is none other than Maria Von Trapp, who inspired my parents back in the day to change my name from Frances to Maria when my mom was eight months pregnant at the movie theatre watching the movie The Sound of Music.

While practicing yoga, our views from the yoga room at Stowe Mountain Ranch included watching the changing colors of the sky as the sun rose over the mountains, the beautiful falling snow, and the horses grazing outside the barn. But the hills are not hills in Stowe, Vermont; they are mountains. And these mountains are not only alive with the sound of music but are teeming with beauty!

Fresh Air The air in the mountains of Vermont just felt cleaner and crisper, and when hiking or skiing, the cool air in my lungs felt downright therapeutic. I came to Vermont with a bit of congestion from a cold and left with my chest perfectly clear, and I’m thinking it was the physical activity and invigorating crisp mountain air filling my lungs that did the trick!

Double Dipping Yoga & Meditation When you go on a yoga retreat, not only do you get to do yoga every day, but you get to do it twice a day! The mornings were reserved for a brisker practice that focused on opening the shoulders and wrists, calves, knees, thighs, and hips – all the essential body parts that were going to get a work out, whether from knitting, hiking, or skiing. The evening candlelight yoga sessions were restorative with deep, long stretches to aid in releasing the body parts used in the day’s knitasana/skiasana activities and to let the joints and connective tissues open up with the help of bolsters, blocks, and blankets.

Each session included time to meditate. During the course of the weekend, we learned about the importance of nurturing ourselves, the gift of the precious present, finding bliss by letting go of that which you don’t have, and how to open our hearts and listen to the universe. There was lots of time to quiet the mind, grow deeper into practice, reflect, journal, and ultimately find renewal.

Tess We love you Tess – oh yes, we do! Tess, an incredible chef, baker, and nurturer, was truly the rock star of the weekend. Tess doesn’t go to the store to buy bread and desserts; he lovingly makes them from the best ingredients. He went way beyond providing three square meals a day with his healthy, delicious, and creative creations, and he even shared his talents by teaching a few lucky participants how to bake bread one afternoon. Here is one of a few food reports from the retreat posted to Facebook . . .
. . . lunch was sweet potato chili and tuna melt made with crème cheese on homemade bread, snack of a homemade granola brittle. Dinner was penne with spinach, heirloom tomatoes and chestnuts, a shrimp angel hair with a super light creamy sauce, balsamic glazed veggies and French silk pie for dessert.
Can you say YUM!

There was a lot of laughter around this dinner table each night!
Bryon, Tyrone and Vernon There was only one retreat participant who wasn’t from Ohio, but we welcomed him with open arms. And Bryon – I mean Tyrone – wait, I mean Vernon – quickly won all of our hearts. Little did we know that Vernon was secretly watching our every move throughout the weekend, capturing all our idiosyncrasies and personality traits so he could cleverly create the coveted Skiasana awards that he presented to us on the last evening of the retreat. Awards included “Most likely to join a nudist colony,” “Most Unknotted Yogini (that one went to Dee),” “Most Enthusiastic (awarded to Amy),” and “Most likely to make a career change as a result of attending the retreat (awarded to Barb).” I was named “Most Inspirational.” My cheeks hurt from laughing so hard around the dinner table that night, and with his keen observances and witty delivery, Vernon did an excellent job of recapping all the funny moments of the weekend. Now I have an award I would like to give Vernon whom I truly believe will be: “Most Likely to Live Happily Ever After!”

Knitasana I am still kicking myself that I never found the time over the weekend to learn how to knit, but for those who did, Dee Eisner was there to offer the expert guidance and patience required. I did learn that it is extremely hard to talk and knit, so I might have a challenge on my hands when I do try it!
For those of you who want to learn a bit more about the fine art of knitting and meditation, Dee recommends these two books, Mindful Knitting by Tara Jon Manning, and The Knitting Sutra, Craft as a Spiritual Practice by Susan Gordon Lydonneed. And, Dee, I will be calling soon to set up a private knitasana session!

Full Moon Intentions & Purging We were blessed to be on Stowe Mountain on the night of a gorgeous full moon and used the opportunity to bust out a few moon salutations and set full moon intentions, and on the last night of the retreat, we built a fire for the purpose of a purging ceremony. We wrote down on pieces of paper the habit, relationship, or thing in our life we wanted to let go of, and as we threw the paper into the fire, we exclaimed, “Be gone!” It felt good – no, make that really good – and I for one can say that I have been enjoying a newfound peace as a result of purging a few fears that I have been holding on to for way too long. Be gone, fears!

Laughter Yoga Well, I didn’t intend to teach a session of laughter yoga, but the evening I handed out the Yoga Tune-Up® Therapy Balls for our restorative yoga session, let’s just say we couldn’t hold back the laughs. I didn’t realize that showing yogis how to release trigger points with the help of therapy balls would induce such squeals of delight. To quote Vernon, “I gained a lot of flexibility on the last yoga retreat I attended, but I never dreamed I’d be able to get my balls in between my shoulder blades on this one.”

Swag If you came to Skiasana, you left with some pretty cool swag, like a NamaSTAY Yoga Towel, a pair of Yoga Tune-Up® Therapy Balls, and a handmade journal made of recycled paper. I want to give a big shout-out and hug to Cherie Greenwald of NamaSTAY Yoga Towels for sponsoring the retreat. These patented yoga towels have a unique feature of sleeves that wrap around the ends of yoga mats to provide slip-free protection while practicing yoga. The plush towels also added an extra layer of luxurious comfort during our evening restorative yoga sessions and meditation.

Husbandasana I know this might be hard for some of you to believe, but up until the time we went on the retreat, my husband had never been to one of my yoga classes. I told him that if he wanted to join me on the retreat to ski, he couldn’t come unless he came to all the yoga. I wasn’t sure if he actually would, but I’m happy to report that he showed up on the mat and attended every yoga session without any complaints and without me having to coax him. I don’t know if he’ll continue with his practice, but I’ll never forget how joyful and verklempt I felt when I saw him come up so strong and balanced into ardha chandrasana pose for the first time. Thanks, Vince, for making one of my dreams come true.

I can never stop at 10! So here’s one more….
Community One of my favorite things about yoga retreats is the community that is formed among a group of people who come to the retreat as strangers and leave as friends. It is something I always hope will happen, but you never know if the group is going to gel. Well this group gelled instantly, and the sense of community rocked!

I’m going to hold on to my Vermont Mountain high as long as I can, and I’m already dreaming about where the next SKIASANA yoga retreat will be held! Sending huge hugs and lots of gratitude to Tari, Dee, Amy, Jinny, Kathy, Jim, Barb, Vernon, and Vince for joining me on the retreat, for letting me guide them for a weekend in yoga and meditation, and for sharing their light and laughter with me! Also huge hugs to Jen and the staff at The Travel Yogi for the expert customer service and care in making this retreat a reality. I am truly blessed to get to do what I love!
