Cool Yoga Music

August 20, 2010

You don’t have to rub crystals and listen to Yanni to get into the practice of yoga.

Music and yoga are both a big part of my life and both bring me a great deal of joy. Listening to great music while practicing yoga is my idea of nirvana. I’m not a fan of the harpy, Zenlike, airy-fairy genre of music. I’m talking about full-on rap, hip-hop, and rock-’n’-roll music, with a few mellow slow-dance songs thrown in for savasana cooldowns.

I’ve been writing about my favorite upbeat yoga music for a while, so here are a few past blog entries you may want to check out.

“Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul Create the symphony of life.” -B.K.S. Iyengar

“Yoga is almost like music in a way; there’s no end to it.”  -Sting

This is great, thanks! I’ve been wanting to find some contemporary music for my playlists, but just don’t have the time to seek out music and put it all together.

Lots of people use the New World Kirtan podcast for their Yoga practice. It’s about an hour of Western style kirtan music, and there’s a new one every week. Lots of back episodes too, check it out: http://www.newworldkirtan.com
Love your site!

Just discovered your site and I really enjoy your info and energy. Here are a few songs that keep making it onto my class playlists that you may enjoy “Peace, Love & Happiness” by G. Love & Special Sauce, “I Like You” by S.J., “Simply Beautiful” by Queen Latifah (Leela James’ is awesome too) and “Beauty in the World” by Macy Gray. Thanks again for your site!

I have been using pieces by Matthew C. Shuman in my Yoga group for the past couple months now. They fit my routines nearly perfectly and my class members consistently compliment my song selection. I downloaded his CDs from Amazon and iTunes, looks like there are hard copies available through his website. http://www.matthewcshuman.com

Amazon: Escape from Reality, Falling Into Place, Natural Emotion
